Recently the Dice Dragons (www.dicedragons.co.uk) provided me with a few sets of their dice and four dice trays and asked for an honest review. I once again recruited our willing and excitable Roll for Joy youth to help me with the review. Check out the video below.

The Foldable Dice Trays

Each of these dice trays is made of a nice quality polyurethane leather and sports the striking Dice Dragons logo. The logo is probably one of my favorite logo designs and matches the D&D aesthetic to a T. They fold flat and snap together with metal snaps. The youth preferred the slightly larger hexagon trays with more of a felted feel ($15 on their site), while I personally was drawn to the square trays that had a more classic leather finish ($12 on their site). I liked the extra stitching around the edges that frames the logo and the clarity that the classic leather finish brings to the design.

I would dock them a couple points for the build quality though. One small gripe is that one of the snaps on the blue tray was damaged, making it difficult to fully snap. There are also a few rough spots in the stitching on each of the trays, where the thread protrudes at the beginning and end of the stitch. Other than those minimal issues, these are some really nice and colorfully bold dice trays! At $12 and $15 these are an affordable piece of TTRPG gear.

The Dice

Dice Dragons also sent us two sets of dice and a black dice bag. We received the Pastel Dreams Dice Set, the Ethereal Teal Dice Set, and the Gold Dragon Dice Bag.

First off, the dice look great. Personally, I really enjoyed the look of the Ethereal Teal set. The font used for the numbering on the dice is fancy enough to be interesting and clear enough to be legible, which is a lot harder to find on dice than it sounds. The sparkles and whorls in the dice make them beautiful both on the table and in the dice trays. I do wish the coloring of the numbers was something other than white, especially on the pink pastel dreams set.

My last issue with the dice is one I can’t quite put my finger on. There is something about the quality that feels lacking. Next to my set from Chessex they look and feel a bit… cheap. Only slightly so. They do run slightly cheaper as well, at $10/set vs $12 for a similar set from Chessex.

The Gold Dragon dice bag was a nice addition. It’s always good to have somewhere to store your dice. You can fit 2 full sets of dice inside. The material is soft, but a little stiff. They call it “flannelette”. The drawstring feels a bit cheap. Both are synthetic fibers and I would have preferred something more natural. It does sport that beautiful dragon logo though! It’s not my favorite dice bag, but it works. It’s a nice item to have so that I can quickly pull out a complete set from my large bag-o-dice. They run $7 on the Dice Dragons website.

My players are looking forward to taking these dice for a roll in our next adventure. Hopefully they roll well enough to help them escape the intractable Desert Wilds and continue their search for the next Gem of Power!

Final Thoughts

The highlight from this review set was definitely the dice trays. They are classy, quality, and colorful. I have never been a dice tray user myself, but this product has made me a convert. I really enjoy not having to chase my dice across the table, and the satisfying rolling sound brings me a great deal of joy. Extra points for that quality dice roll sound!

Looking at some of the other items available on the Dice Dragons site, I really like the look of their metal dice. There’s a lot they have on offer!
